Disabled Access to the Council Offices

As a result of recent discussions Portland Town Council wishes to acknowledge the difficulties that many disabled people experience in accessing the Council Offices and attending its meetings.

The Offices were opened in 1934 and at present do not comply with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 regarding wheelchair users and other people with mobility problems. Nor do they offer facilities for those with hearing difficulties.

The Town Council is currently considering proposals to transfer its accommodation to the lower ground floor of the Offices building. By this means it hopes to provide in conjunction with Weymouthand Portland Borough Council, who own the building, better access for those with mobility problems.

With regard to the hard of hearing, the Town Council is pressing ahead with making suitable provision and will publish further details when they become available.
